Physical plasma to support wound healing

Cold plasma, also known as cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), is a type of plasma that can be applied without significant heating of the tissue. It produces reactive oxygen and nitrogen compounds that can affect microorganisms and support the body’s natural wound-healing processes. [1, 2]

What does cold plasma do?

The substances produced can also support the body’s own cells during important healing processes. These include, for example, the formation of new tissue, renewal of the skin and regulation of inflammatory processes. [1, 2]

At the same time, cold plasma can reduce the number of microorganisms in the wound and influence the formation or stability of biofilms. [1, 2]

Use in chronic wounds

In chronic wounds, inflammation, microorganisms and delayed healing can make the natural healing process more difficult. Cold plasma can be used here as a complementary treatment. [1, 2]

Studies have shown positive results, particularly for chronic wounds and diabetic foot ulcers. Reported effects include smaller wound areas, improved healing rates and fewer bacteria in the wound. A 2026 meta-analysis evaluated 12 randomised controlled trials involving 477 patients. [3, 4]

Further applications

Cold plasma is also used or being scientifically investigated for infected wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, wound-healing disorders and burns. There are also applications for certain skin conditions. [1–4] For tumour wounds, cold plasma may be used in palliative care to reduce the local microbial burden and thereby help reduce wound odour. [5]

The therapy device used
